Enter Art Foundation is pleased to present it’s eleventh exhibition, ‘Transformation’. This exhibition consists of a group of 25 international multidisciplinary artists and will take place in Bunker K101, a former World War II bomb shelter, in Ehrenfeld, Cologne. The plot of land the bunker was built on has a dark history. From 1927 on, there was a synagogue occupying the same land. The synagogue was burnt to the ground during Kristallnacht, the night of November 9, 1938. After the remaining Jewish institutions were forced to sell the land in 1942/43, an air raid shelter was erected. The bunker was built across from where the synagogue had been located, as it was too costly and time consuming to excavate the synagogue’s still existing foundation. After the War, the bunker was used to house displaced families and, subsequently, for storage. In 1995 the building became a historically recognized and listed building, now primarily used for art exhibitions and commemorative activities.

In keeping with the various uses of the location, I have chosen the theme of transformation for Enter Art Foundation’s first exhibition in Cologne. Some artists in the exhibition echo the site’s history directly by working on themes of National Socialism and the Holocaust, while others focus on a more general interpretation of the theme. The exhibition includes painting, photography, printmaking, and drawing, as well as new media such as video, sound and light installation.
