German Emotions
German Remotions belongs to one of the first bodies of work Jorge da Cruz developed after moving to Berlin. Made during a period without a permanent studio, the series grew from a deliberately simple way of working: found pages, old documents, discarded books and flea-market material became surfaces for new images.
Photographs taken by Jorge in Lisbon—often with a Lomo camera—were printed with an ordinary inkjet printer directly onto pages from old architecture books, official documents and other fragments chosen almost by chance. At times, photographs were replaced by short inscriptions, poetic statements or small everyday references, including pieces of Lego.
The works reflect an early attempt to understand Berlin through fragments. Housing, ideas of home, and the visible differences between East and West became recurring subjects, together with a fascination for the city’s architecture and its recent history. Old plans and diagrams sit beside contemporary photographs, creating connections between different moments of the city.
Rather than constructing a complete portrait of Berlin, German Remotions works like an unfinished puzzle: found material, personal images and small observations used to build a first idea of a city that Jorge would eventually call home for more than fifteen years.
